Happy 10 Month Birthday (2 days late)!!!!

So, my little girls are now 10 months old. I cannot believe how fast the time is going! I say that all the time but it is so so true! I feel like they were just born and now here we are 10 months later. The girls are doing great. They are on the verge of crawling. I really think they will be crawling by the end of this month, if not sooner. They are also starting to eat Cheerios and we gave them Biter Biscuits this past weekend and they LOVED them. I had given them Cheerios about a month ago and they were not interested but I tried again a weeks ago and they loved it so now I try to give them the Cheerios for a snack every afternoon. They are getting very vocal. I don't know who will be talking first but I know they will be talking very very soon!! Becky will just start going on and on and before you know it Kayla is there chattering away too. So cute! I love hearing them "talk" to each other. I can't believe how big they are. They weigh about 20 lbs and are 28-29 inches long!! They will be graduating to big girl car seats in a couple of weeks. They will also be getting a new stroller b/c the stroller I have now is just a frame that you snap the car seats into. It worked great when they were small but now their legs are getting so long that whoever is in the back kicks the one in the front. Good times!

20 more days until Halloween. I keep going back and forth about what I want to do. I wanted to buy them some costumes but now I am thinking maybe I should make them (with my mom's help). I really want them to be dressed up as something b/c they are going "trick or treating" at school. We'll see what I can come up with. Next year I am buying them costumes and we are going around the neighborhood. =D

Well, that is all for now. Hope everyone has a great week! Talk to you later.

It's Ocotber already???

Wow! September just came and went so fast, my head is spinning. So, let's see.. Lots of stuff happened last month. On September 6th, Rebecca was admitted to the hospital with Bacterial Meningitis!!! It all started Sunday night (the 5th). She was a little cranky and refused to drink her 11 pm bottle. At about midnight I checked her temp b/c she was feeling a little warm to me. Sure enough, she had a temp of 101. So, I gave her some Tylenol and we went to bed. Kayla had drank her bottle and was in bed already. At about 3 am on Monday morning Rebecca wakes up screaming. I check her temp and she is up to 103. I call the doctor and the nurse tells me to give her a tepid bath, more Tylenol and recheck it again in 4 hours. So I did what she told me and at 7 am it was around 102. I fed Rebecca her bottle and called the doctor b/c now I am starting to see a rash on her chest and upper arms. I tell this to the nurse and she tells me it is probably a fever rash. Ok, she's the expert. I'll go with it. As I am talking to her Rebecca vomits up her whole bottle. I tell the nurse this and she tells me to give her Pedialyte and continue giving her Tylenol and checking her temps. If they go over 104 or she is not tolerating the Pedialyte I am to call her back ASAP. Other wise, call her at 4 pm to re-evaluate. So, again, I do what I am told. She tolerates her Pedialyte and her temps stay under 104 but she is getting increasingly lethargic and the rash is now spreading. The rash went from looking like little pin-pricks to small bruises. The rash started turning purple and angry looking. I call the doctor back and explain to another nurse what was going on. She patches me over to the Pediatrician and he says get to the nearest ER NOW!!! So, we take her to the nearest hospital and within minutes of arriving they are taking blood and urine samples. The ER docs are now asking us a million and one questions. Where have we been for the past 4-6 days? Who has been in contact with her? Does she go to daycare? Any siblings in the house? So forth and so on.. My head is spinning trying to answer as accurately as possible. Then they say they have to do a spinal tap. At this point they start saying they suspect Meningitis. WHAT?!?!? How the hell did my precious baby get MENINGITIS?????? Now I am starting to panic. Why is this happening? What is going to happen next? Will she be ok? What about Kayla? Is she infected to and we don't know it? Are WE infected? The questions just keep coming and the answers aren't good. They aren't sure how it happened. The suspect she got it in daycare. They say we have to wait and see how her body reacts to the antibiotics. They cannot guarantee that she will be ok. They are primarily concerned about whether or not she will make it through the night. You mean she might die?!?!?!? It's a possibility, they say. Also, they tell us that Kayla needs to come in to be checked out. Holy sh*t!! I cannot, WILL NOT lose my baby. I can't! This is crazy. She was fine 24 hours ago and now they are telling me that she is on the brink of death!? So, we bring Kayla in and she gets treated with prophylactic antibiotics. They tell us she is fine but to keep an eye on her to make sure she doesn't start getting the rash or fevers. The whole night my husband and I slept next to Rebecca in her room. I was NOT leaving her for a second. Every time this monitor or that monitor went off I jumped up to see what it was. I knew we would be ok when morning came and nothing major had happened. To say it was the scariest night of my life is an understatement. She spent 8 more days in the hospital getting antibiotics and tests of her brain function to make sure there was no permanent damage. There isn't. THANK GOD!! She is doing great now and the rash is all but gone. She has a few spots in her groin but they are fading quickly.

Once that incident was over I got the girls back on schedule with feeding and schedules and such. We started adding lunch to the food schedule. I started them out slowly with stage 1 veggies b/c I knew they wouldn't be able to handle a 4 oz jar of food for lunch right away. I am thinking that Kayla is ready to move up to a 4 oz jar. Rebecca isn't there just yet.

In development news, the girls are ALMOST crawling! Kayla is starting to figure out how the whole crawling business works and I think with a little more practice, she will figure it out in about a week or so. Rebecca is my studier. She watches Kayla to see how she does it and I am sure once Kayla gets moving that Rebecca will be right behind her. =)

It's been a very eventful month and I am ready for October to beless eventful inthat no one gets sick. Only good events from now on! Halloween is coming up and I cannot wait to see the girls all dressed up!! The girls are having a halloween party at school and I really wantto be there to see all the kids dressed up. =D We won't be taking them trick or treating this year b/c well, they can't eat the candy. Plus we are going out of town that day to visit family. We will go next year! Well, that is all for now. Talk at you later.

Happy Saturday!

Well, today we had a busy day of running errands and grocery shopping. Tomorrow we will just be home relaxing.. Starting tomorrow the girls will start having Stage 2 dinners. I had been giving them Stage 1 Meat with a Stage 1 Veggie. Today at the store I found some Stage 2 meat/veggie combos so we will be starting those. We went to the GI doc this past week and she said that we could start introducing Cheerios, Puffs and increase their solids intake. They went from taking 4 oz in the moring and 2.5 oz at dinner to 4 oz in the morning and 4 oz at dinner. I knew they were ready for that b/c I was noticing that they would get fussy after eating like they wanted more. They get a bottle with their dinner too. The Puffs are these little snack things that melt in the babies' mouths and and used to teach them how to chew and manipulate the tongue to guide the food to the back of the mouth. Kayla and Rebecca love them. The only issue I am having now is that they want to be fed like little birds instead of picking it up with their little hands. We will continue to work on that with them.

The girls are teething big time now. Rebecca has started waking up in the middle of the night crying. Last night she got up a record 7 times!!! Hopefully it will be a calmer night tonight. I bought them some of those all natual teething tablets. I am hoping they will work for them. I have heard good things about them. Eventhough they are drooling up a storm, waking at night, cranky at times and in constant need of something to chew on. I have yet to see a tooth. I will let you know as soon as I see one but for now they are still toothless..

The girls started daycare this past week and I think they like it. They had a couple of rough days but for the most part everyone at the daycare is telling me that they are having a good time. I was very nervous about sending them off to daycare but I know itis both necessary and good for them to be around other kids. One thing I do worry about is them getting sick. They came home on Friday with a runny nose but so far no fever and no other cold-like symptoms. I think it is probably teething related. I will admit it is kinda nice to have a few hours alone to get things done around the house and get things ready to go back to work. Of course, I miss them the minute they leave. *sigh* What's a mother to do?

Well, that is all for now. Time to go to sleep. Talk at you all later! =)

Lipstick Moments

I have been reading this blog called Rants From MommyLand and they had a post recently called Lipstick Moments where they talk about little moments that were special to them and how fleeting they can be. So, I thought I would write down a few of my own "Lipstick Moments". Here goes..

*Staying up late giggling with my little cousin
*Waving goodbye to my grandma as she sits on the couch headed for the car to go to the airport not realizing that would be the last time I would ever see her alive.
*Meeting the man who would become my husband
*Graduating from Nursing School
*Recieving a letter from the Board of Nursing saying I passed the boards
*Becoming a wife
*Finding out I was pregnant
*My first daughter, Kayla Brynn, being born
*Two minutes later, my second daughter Rebecca Gianna, being born
*Seeing my youngest daughter for the first time and touching her fragile skin
*Seeing my oldest daughter for the first time and not being able to touch her
*Holding Rebecca for the first time and telling her I loved her.
*Telling Kayla that Mommy loved her.
*Finding out that Kayla's surgery was a success and being able to see her again.
*Feeding Rebecca at home for the 1st time.
*Holding Kayla for the first time at 2 months old
*Getting a call from the surgeon telling me Kayla was doing well from her 2nd surgery and that I could come see her now.
*Seeing Kayla and told her everything would be ok and that Mommy and Daddy are here..
*Sitting on my couch at home, holding both of my babies in my arms together for the first time.
*Sitting on the edge of my bed watching my babies sleep in the PNP together and marveling at how tiny they are..
*Listening to them laugh
*Watching them discover each other.
*Holding them in my arms as the sleep peacefully
*Watching their little faces light up when they I walk into the room.

I suppose I could go on and on but I won't for now. It is incredible how far we have come in just 8 1/2 months. There are so many little moments in life that happen and we don't realize until after the fact how precious that moment really was. Well, that is all for today. Hope everyone has a fabulous weekend!

7/8 Month Stats

Hey, wait a second! How the heck did I end up with almost 8 month olds already??? Well, here we are. The girls are getting bigger and bigger everyday. They have FINALLY started rolling over and now have decided to start sitting up too! Yaay! We have been trying new foods every 3-5 days and so far so good. The only one that no one seems to care for is chicken. Kayla cried her eyes out after 3 bites and refused to even drink her bottle the first time I gave it to her. I guess she was afraid it was chicken flavored. I calmed her down and got her to drink it. Rebecca is ok with the chicken but it is definately not her favorite. We also tried Beef and that one was a hit. Kayla and Rebecca both loved it. Go figure! LOL. We are officially done introducing the stage one foods. We will be starting stage 2 pretty soon. They love to eat! We have also started weaning Kayla off of her special formula and onto regular formula. Woohoo! That will save us a boat-load of money!! That special stuff was like $30 a can when the regular stuff is like $20 a can (or cheaper). She seems to be tolerating the protein pretty well. Her special formula had pre-digested proteins in it so I was worried that if we went from special formula to whole milk at age 1 that it would be a shock to her system. The GI doc gave us the green light to slowly switch her to regular formula so that the switch to whole milk wouldn't be such a shock to her.

They went to their physical therapy evals a few weeks ago and did great!! They are on target for a 5 and 6 month old. They were even doing things a 7 month old should do. The main issue was the rolling over. They are just starting to do that. So, hopefully they won't need much PT after all. They went to their first PT appt this past week also and did very well. The therapist worked with both of them on strengthening their core abdominal muscles. This will help them with everything from sitting up to crawling in the near future. The therapist was also happy with how well they were doing with tolerating tummy time. When I first started doing tummy time they absolutely hated it and Kayla would vomit thanks to her Reflux. Now they can handle almost 30 minutes on their tummies!! Woohoo. They also want to crawl soooo badly! Kayla gets so frustrated b/c she tries to crawl but she just does not have the strength or coordination yet. It's cute but kinda sad at the same time. LOL.

What else? Oh yeah. They are starting to "talk" now. Rebecca looks at my mom and Ross's mom and says "Goo Goo" and loves to say "Ah-goo ah-goo" Kayla growls. hehe. I really have to get that on video. It is hilarious when she looks at you and says "Gaaaaaa" LOL That's my girl! They haven't said Mama or Dada yet. Although when they cry it kinda sounds like they say "Maaaaaaa" but I could just be hearing things.. I have been working with them to get them to call me Mommy. We will see how that works.. Like I said so far nothing yet.

They start Daycare on August 24th. We have decided that they will be starting when Ross goes back to school. I am going back to work and I figure it's time for them to start to socialize with other kids besides their sibling. I think they will like it. They love being the center of attention and the daycare center is located in the school that Ross teaches in so he can be there in 5 seconds if he had to. Also, they said he could drop in whenever he wanted. I feel better knowing that one of us is right there just in case. =) The school has a child care program for the high school students. Only seniors who are in Level 4 will be able to interact with the kids. So, Kayla and Rebecca will have HS students who are willing to play with them all day long! They will love that! hehe. The lady who runs the program is really nice and really made me feel comfortable about the HS students being there b/c at first I was weary of the babies being exposed to HS students (germs and such). But, she is a stickler for hygiene and runs a pretty tight ship. So, it'll be fun. I will miss them like crazy but I will only be working like 3 days a week and will see them at night after work.

Well, that is all for now. Hope everyone is having a great weekend.

6 Month Stats

We went to the doctor last week and here are their updated stats:

Kayla- She weighed in at 14 lb 6oz (25th percentile) and was 24 inches long (25th percentile). The doc was happy with her growth and weight gain. Her Reflux is getting a little better. We have an appointment with the GI doc on Tuesday. I am interested to see what she has to say about whether or not we should switch meds. I say this b/c while it is getting a little better, it is not completely gone. There was a brief time where it was pretty much gone and the Zantac was working great. Now she spits up at least 2-3 times a day sometimes more. I find I have to be careful when to do tummy time with her and I can't play with her without making her spit up. She is getting such a personality. She just loves to smile and laughs at everything we say. You would think we were the most hilarious people they way she carries on. LOL. I love hearing her laugh and those big gummy smiles...

Rebecca- She weighed in at 14 lb and 14 oz ( 30th percentile) and is 24.25 inches ( 25th percentile). The doc was also pleased with her growth and weight gain but upon inspection of her ears found that they are impacted with wax! I knew something was going on b/c her hearing has been affected. Sometimes she responds to me and sometimes she doesn't.. The doc tried to clean it out but no luck.. So, I had to clean them out with a few drops of half strength hydrogen peroxide once a day for about 5 days.
We took her back this week to get them cleared out. We went to the Dr on Wednesday and the doc took another look inside. It was still full of wax. So, she took out her tools and we got Rebecca in position and she started, for lack of a better term, digging.. She managed to pull out a 1 inch long chunk of wax from the left side. She dug some more and got another good size chunk out. Same story on the right side. I have never seen so much wax come from one child in my life! Rebecca screamed through the whole thing. Once she got the wax out, she flushed her ears with water just to make sure she got it all. When she flushed, a bunch of white filmy stuff came out. The white filmy stuff is indicative of an old infection. To my knowledge, she has never had an ear infection. She has never been exceptionally fussy, no pulling or playing with the ears and no fever or feeling especially warm to me. The doc said it must have happened between age 4 months and 6 months b/c at 4 months her ears were perfectly clear. She said not to worry, it happens a lot. We go back in 6 week or sooner if she starts having issues with hearing or starts to complain about her ears. I must say I am quite relieved that it was only wax. I was starting to worry that she may have a real hearing problem but now we know she's just a waxy kid! LOL. It was so cute, when the doc was done, Rebecca started laughing and smiling. I spoke into one ear then the other and she responded immediately!! She hasn't done that in a long time! She is so funny now. It's like she didn't realize how noisy the world really is! LOL.
Rebecca is quite the "talker". I can't wait to see what kind of kid she turns out to be. She is going to be my little trouble maker in school. I can see it now. "Mrs. Miller, I need to speak to you about your daughter Rebecca. She doesn't seem to want to sit down and listen. She is always up talking to the other students...." She has a funny disposition. She'll do something funny and look at you like "What? What's so funny?" when she knows she did something funny. =D

We have started the girls on solids. So far they have tried Carrots, Sweet Potato, Squash and Bananas. They seem to like everything. The bananas, though, were not a favorite at first. Tomorrow (Saturday) I will be starting a new fruit with them. We venture into the wonderful world of Pears! I am not a huge fan of pears. I mean I like them but I wouldn't say they were my favorite fruit. I am going to try to stay neutral and let the girls decide whether they like them or not. Luckily, they are at a stage where my like or dislike for something doesn't matter to them. I have to say, I am very lucky to have such good eaters. We will see how they are a year from now. =) If they are like me, they will stay good eaters. If they are like their father, I am in trouble! He was a very picky eater as a child. Oy!

Well, it is getting late... Time to feed a baby. Hope everyone has a great weekend! I'll let you know how the pears go.
